SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which details Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well.

Scripture

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NIV)

Observation

In these verses, Paul emphasizes the divine inspiration and authority of the Scriptures. He outlines the multifaceted purposes of Scripture, which include:

  • Teaching: Providing instruction and knowledge about God, life, and moral conduct.
  • Rebuking: Exposing wrong beliefs and behaviors, convicting individuals of their sins.
  • Correcting: Guiding individuals back to the right path when they have gone astray.
  • Training in Righteousness: Cultivating a lifestyle that reflects God’s will and character.

The ultimate goal is that believers are thoroughly equipped for every good work. This means being prepared and ready to carry out God’s will in all areas of life.

Application

  • Personal Growth: Reflect on areas in your life where you need more teaching, rebuking, correcting, or training. Ask God to reveal these areas through your study of the Bible.
  • Teaching Others: Consider how you can use Scripture to help guide others in their faith journey. Whether through teaching, mentoring, or simply sharing insights, let Scripture be your foundation.
  • Daily Living: Aim to integrate the teachings of Scripture into your daily routines. Let it inform your decisions, shape your character, and guide your interactions with others.
  • Preparation for Service: Recognize that studying Scripture isn’t just for personal benefit but also to prepare you for serving others. Be open to the opportunities God provides to do good works.
