The Book of Genesis is where it all begins—the story of creation, the foundation of our faith, and the introduction of God as the sovereign Creator. In the very first verses of the Bible, we are given a glimpse into the majesty and power of God as He brings the universe into existence. Genesis 1:1-2 sets the stage for everything that follows, showing us that even in the midst of nothingness, God was present, ready to create and bring order. As we explore these verses through this SOAP Bible Study: Genesis 1:1-2, we will see how God’s creative power and presence in the beginning of time can also relate to the beginning of new things in our own lives.

Scripture

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 (NIV)

Observation

In these opening verses of the Bible, we see the beginning of everything. God, in His infinite power, created the heavens and the earth. At this point, the earth was formless, empty, and shrouded in darkness. Yet, even in the midst of this emptiness and chaos, God’s Spirit was present, hovering over the waters. This reveals that even when everything seems void and uncertain, God is actively preparing to bring order, life, and purpose.

These verses introduce God as the Creator, the One who initiates everything. The presence of the Holy Spirit from the very beginning emphasizes His active role in creation, moving over the chaotic waters and setting the stage for the work to come. Additionally, while not directly mentioned here, the New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, was also involved in creation (John 1:1-3). Through Him, all things were made.

Application

These verses remind us that God is always present, even in our lives when things feel formless, empty, or dark. Just as He began to create order out of chaos, He can do the same in our lives. When we feel lost or overwhelmed, we can trust that God’s Spirit is there, ready to bring light and life into our situations.

Reflect on areas in your life that might feel chaotic or empty. Ask God to hover over those areas with His Spirit and bring His order and peace. Trust that He is in control and that He has a plan, even when things seem uncertain.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for being the Creator of all things. Thank You for Your presence, even in the darkest and most chaotic times. I ask that Your Spirit would move in the areas of my life where I feel lost or overwhelmed. Bring Your order, peace, and light into my life. Help me to trust in Your plan and to rely on Your presence always. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
