SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 1:29-34.

Scripture

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.’ Then John gave this testimony: ‘I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.‘” (John 1:29-34)

Observation

This passage describes a significant moment when John the Baptist publicly identifies Jesus as the Messiah, the “Lamb of God.” This title points to Jesus’ role in sacrificial atonement, akin to a lamb used in sacrifices for sins. John emphasizes that Jesus existed before him and is greater, even though Jesus started His public ministry later. John also shares how the Holy Spirit’s descent upon Jesus during His baptism confirmed Jesus’ identity to him, reinforcing that Jesus would baptize not just with water, but with the Holy Spirit.

Application

John the Baptist’s declaration invites us to reflect on our understanding and acknowledgment of Jesus as the Lamb of God in our lives. It challenges us to consider how we are testifying about Jesus to others. Do we recognize and declare His sacrificial role and divine authority? This passage also encourages us to seek a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, understanding that through the Spirit, we can truly know Jesus and his mission. In our personal walk with God, acknowledging Jesus as the Lamb of God should shape how we live, love, and serve, as we appreciate the magnitude of His sacrifice for our sins.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, including mine. Help me to fully grasp the depth of Your sacrifice and to live in a manner worthy of Your gift. Strengthen my faith and empower me to be a witness to Your grace and truth. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, that I may serve You faithfully and recognize Your work in my life and the lives of those around me. May my words and actions testify to Your lordship and Your love. Amen.
