SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 1:9-13.

Scripture

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:9-13)

Observation

This passage describes Jesus as the “true light” illuminating every person, emphasizing His universal impact and invitation. Despite His foundational role in creation, Jesus faces rejection; the world did not recognize Him, and His own people did not accept Him. This stark rejection is contrasted with the profound acceptance given to those who believe in Him—they are granted the extraordinary right to become children of God. This new birth is depicted as divine in origin, transcending human heritage or effort.

Application

This passage challenges us to reflect on our own reception of Jesus. It encourages us to ask ourselves if we truly recognize and accept Jesus as the “true light” and what implications that recognition has for our lives. For those who accept Him, the promise is transforming: becoming children of God, a relationship that offers new identity and purpose. It invites us to live as true followers of Christ, reflecting His light in our actions and interactions, and to reassess our roles as bearers of this light to others who are still in darkness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the true light, into this world. Help me to fully embrace Him, not just as my Savior but as the central figure in my life. Forgive me for the times I have not recognized Him or have lived as though He is not essential to my everyday existence. Please strengthen my faith and deepen my understanding of what it means to be Your child, born of Your will and spirit. Use me to reflect Your light and love to those around me, that they might come to know You and receive the wonderful gift of becoming Your children. Amen.
