SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 2:18-22, which discusses the aftermath of Jesus cleansing the temple:

Scripture

“The Jews then responded to him, ‘What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.’ They replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?’ But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:18-22)

Observation

In this passage, the Jews demand a sign from Jesus to justify His actions in cleansing the temple. Jesus responds with a prophetic statement about His death and resurrection, saying, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” The Jews misunderstand Him, thinking He is referring to the physical temple, which took forty-six years to build. However, Jesus is speaking about His body, foretelling His resurrection. After Jesus’ resurrection, His disciples remember His words and believe in the scriptures and the words He had spoken. This passage highlights Jesus’ foreknowledge of His death and resurrection and emphasizes the importance of faith and understanding in His teachings.

Application

This passage encourages us to seek a deeper understanding of Jesus’ words and teachings, recognizing that His statements often have profound spiritual meanings beyond the literal sense. It also highlights the significance of Jesus’ resurrection as the ultimate sign of His authority and divinity. In our own lives, we are called to remember and reflect on Jesus’ words, especially during times of confusion or doubt. As the disciples’ faith was strengthened by recalling Jesus’ prophecy and witnessing its fulfillment, we too can find assurance in the truth of His promises and the power of His resurrection.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your prophetic words and the powerful sign of Your resurrection. Help us to seek a deeper understanding of Your teachings and to recognize the spiritual truths they convey. Strengthen our faith as we remember Your words and the fulfillment of Your promises. May we find assurance and hope in Your resurrection, knowing that it confirms Your authority and divinity. Teach us to trust in Your wisdom and to hold fast to Your promises, even when we do not fully understand. Amen.
