SOAP Bible Study: John 2:6-10

SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 2:6-10.

Here’s a SOAP Bible study for John 2:6-10, which covers Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana:

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’ They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’” (John 2:6-10)

In this passage, Jesus performs His first public miracle by turning water into wine. The stone water jars, typically used for ceremonial washing, symbolize purification and are repurposed to display Jesus’ miraculous power. By instructing the servants to fill these jars with water and then draw some out, Jesus transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. The master of the banquet, unaware of the miracle, praises the quality of the wine, recognizing it as superior to what had been served earlier. This act not only solves the immediate problem of the wine shortage but also signifies the abundance and excellence of what Jesus brings into our lives.
