SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 3:1-2, which introduces the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus.
Scripture
“Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.'” (John 3:1-2)
Observation
In these verses, we are introduced to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council, known as the Sanhedrin. Despite his high status and position, Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night, indicating a desire for a private and perhaps cautious meeting. He acknowledges Jesus as a Rabbi and recognizes that the signs Jesus performs are evidence of His divine mission. Nicodemus’ approach to Jesus shows a mix of respect, curiosity, and the recognition of Jesus’ divine connection.
Application
Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus at night signifies a few important points for us to reflect on. First, it highlights the importance of seeking understanding and truth, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zones or usual routines. Like Nicodemus, we should approach Jesus with our questions and seek deeper knowledge about Him. Second, Nicodemus’ acknowledgment of Jesus’ divine authority encourages us to recognize and respect the work of God in our lives and the lives of others. We should be open to seeing and believing in the signs of God’s presence and activity around us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of Nicodemus, who sought You out to gain understanding. Help us to approach You with our questions and a sincere desire to know You more deeply. Give us the courage to seek the truth, even when it challenges our current understanding. Open our eyes to recognize Your work in our lives and in the world around us. May we always respect and honor Your divine authority, and grow in our faith and knowledge of You. Amen.
