SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 3:22-26, which describes a discussion about purification and the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist:

Scripture

“After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. This was before John was put in prison. An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.'” (John 3:22-26)

Observation

In this passage, Jesus and His disciples are baptizing in the Judean countryside, while John the Baptist is also baptizing at Aenon near Salim. A dispute arises between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew regarding ceremonial washing. John’s disciples express concern to John that Jesus, the one John testified about, is also baptizing and drawing many people to Him. This scenario highlights the overlapping ministries of John the Baptist and Jesus and the potential for misunderstanding or competition among their followers. It sets the stage for John’s profound response about his role and Jesus’ greater mission.

Application

This passage encourages us to reflect on our attitudes toward ministry and service. Just as John’s disciples were concerned about Jesus’ growing influence, we too can sometimes feel competitive or threatened by others’ successes in ministry. However, this passage challenges us to recognize and celebrate the diverse ways God works through different people and ministries. John the Baptist’s role was to prepare the way for Jesus, and he understood that Jesus’ ministry was the fulfillment of God’s plan. We are reminded to focus on our unique calling and to support and rejoice in the work God is doing through others, understanding that all ministry ultimately serves the same divine purpose.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of John the Baptist, who humbly recognized his role in Your greater mission. Help us to embrace our unique calling and to support and celebrate the work You are doing through others. Teach us to avoid feelings of competition or jealousy in ministry and to focus on serving You faithfully. Give us the grace to recognize that all work done in Your name is for Your glory and the advancement of Your kingdom. Unite us in our common purpose to share Your love and truth with the world. Amen.
