SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible Study: John 3:3-8, which includes Jesus’ teaching about being born again or born from above.

Scripture

“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’ ‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again.” The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.'” (John 3:3-8)

Observation

In this passage, Jesus explains to Nicodemus the necessity of being born again to see and enter the kingdom of God. Nicodemus, puzzled by the idea of being born again, questions how it is possible for a grown person to re-enter their mother’s womb. Jesus clarifies that being born again involves a spiritual rebirth, not a physical one. This rebirth is of water and the Spirit, distinguishing the physical birth from the spiritual birth. Jesus uses the analogy of the wind to describe the mysterious and sovereign nature of the Spirit’s work in bringing about this new birth.

Application

This passage calls us to reflect on the nature of our own spiritual rebirth. Being born again is essential for entering the kingdom of God, highlighting the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We need to examine whether we have experienced this spiritual rebirth and are living in accordance with the Spirit. It reminds us that our relationship with God is not based on physical lineage or human effort but on a profound spiritual transformation initiated by the Holy Spirit. We should be open to the mysterious and sovereign work of the Spirit, allowing Him to guide and shape our lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of spiritual rebirth through Your Holy Spirit. Help us to understand and embrace the necessity of being born again to enter Your kingdom. Open our hearts to the power of Your Spirit, leading us to live lives that reflect this new birth. Teach us to trust in Your Spirit’s guidance and to be receptive to His work in our lives. May we experience the fullness of life that comes from being born of water and the Spirit, and live in a way that honors and glorifies You. Amen.
