SOAP Bible study is a method that involves Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a way to delve deeper into the Bible and apply its teachings to one’s life. Let’s apply this method to our SOAP Bible study for John 4:1-6, which sets the stage for Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well:

Scripture

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.” (John 4:1-6)

Observation

In these verses, we learn that Jesus’ growing influence and the increasing number of His disciples have attracted the attention of the Pharisees. To avoid premature conflict, Jesus leaves Judea and heads back to Galilee. This journey takes Him through Samaria, a region often avoided by Jews due to historical animosities. Jesus stops in Sychar, at Jacob’s well, where He rests from His journey. It’s significant that this encounter occurs at noon, the hottest part of the day, a time when few would be at the well, setting the stage for a private and impactful conversation with a Samaritan woman.
